Summary

A computer is just a computer; it is the quality of the software used that determines outcomes for young children. This unique book looks closely at the issues of using technology with pre-school, kindergarten and primary age children.

Features

  • Provides evaluations of 150 high quality, developmentally appropriate software programs currently available across all platforms (Ch. 2). The guidelines used were originally developed by Haugland & Shade and have recently been updated by Haugland. They are congruent with NAEYC standards. Also helps provide teachers with the skills to perform their own software evaluations.
  • Emphasizes the integration of computers into the classroom and across the curriculum. The focus is on the “how to” of computer integration while still providing the theoretical underpinnings necessary to the complete understanding of when and why to use computers to enhance learning and teaching (Ch. 5).
  • Provides many pedagogical features to enhance learning. Chapters feature vignettes, most commonly asked questions, and tips for teachers to use in implementing a technology plan into their early childhood setting.
  • Includes a chapter on communications outside the classroom—with parents and through the Internet (Ch. 7).
